The Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial is under construction and will be completed July 15, 2006. The Memorial tells the story, in etched granite, of the "secret war" in Laos. This war was fought primarily by the Hmong and other hill people in support of the US efforts in Vietnam.  The Memorial lists the names of those who served and contributed to the Memorial construction.  Family members have also contributed, in order to have the names of loved ones killed during the war remembered on the Memorial.

A complete list of the (more than 200) names of the US Army Special Forces, Air America and Continental Air Services Incorporated flight crews killed in Laos is also included  on the Memorial

The dedication will be held at the Memorial site on Sheboygan, Wisconsin's beautiful, lake front, Deland Park, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM July 15, 2006

All are invited to be part of this historic day.  Ethic and western food and Hmong crafts will be for sale. Hmong dance and music will be featured and a fly over of secret war aircraft is planned to conclude the dedication ceremony.

For those who might wish to make it a weekend trip; the Sheboygan area attractions include the Kohler golf courses including Whistling Straits. The beautiful, new, Blue Harbor Hotel and Resort, on the lakefront, provides first class accommodations, with an indoor water park and is just minutes away from Deland Park.

The memorial is a long time coming to Sheboygan, after several years of winning public support for it and finding an appropriate site. “We focused on finding a location where the memorial would work well with the natural landscape and how the public was already using the land,” says Karl Byrand, a geography professor at University of Wisconsin Sheboygan who serves on the committee. “Likewise, we strove to make the actual design harmonize well with both the function and layout of the landscape.

For instance, an earlier design called for a tree at the center of the memorial to represent life continuing because of the sacrifices made. While that would have made a great symbolic statement, we recognized that the tree might inhibit some residents lake views. So we chose a less obtrusive approach, placing a Hmong-inspired geometric design at the foundation’s center.”

The Lao, Hmong and American Veteran's Memorial committee has initiated its fund-raising campaign. While the designers and many others have volunteered services and goods toward the memorial, still $140,000 will be needed to build it. As of this date we have raised $101,000.

Hmong and the Secret War in Laos Memorial

Please help build a memorial to those Hmong and other Hill Tribes of Laos and the US civilians and Military who all fought valiantly in the long and bloody American effort to counter communism in Southeast Asia.

When asked to protect US soldiers, they put their own lives on the line.

But because they volunteered to serve as part of America's "Secret War," their brave exploits have gone unknown by most US citizens.

For the memorial, the city of Sheboygan has provided a spectacular site on its own lakeshore, at Deland Park, in a well-traveled part of town.

The Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Committee worked closely with the Public Works Committee of the city of Sheboygan on the site selection, which was approved by the full city council.

The memorial provides easy access to all residents and tourists and is in a well-lit, well-patrolled area for protection from vandalism.

Although public land has been donated for the memorial site, ALL other costs of the memorial will be paid through private donations.

Friendly colorful exterior walls feature ceramic mosaics designed by local children to give voice to our future and to complement the natural beauty of the lakeside park, home to festivals and civic events.

The inner circle provides a somber, meditative plane to speak to the past, honor those who fought, and educate those who visit.

The diameter of entire site is 44 feet, the circular design is symbolic of unity and infinity.

The design, including a geometric pattern at center, reflects the culture of the Lao-Hmong people.

Panels of text will be engraved in polished black granite-an elegant and permanent medium to memorialize the Lao, Hmong, and Americans who served in the "Secret War in Laos."

Half the memorial text will be devoted to an educational narrative.

Half of the memorial text will be devoted to listing names of veterans.

With walls only four feet high, the memorial will not block lake views of residents.

Be a part of something monumental.
Help create a landmark tribute on Sheboygan's lakefront.
